IDUN DRYODE™ are state-of-the art soft and dry biopotential electrodes that combine research-grade signal quality with the ease and comfort of a consumer product.
IDUN DRYODE™ pick up biopotentials that originate from nerve and muscle activity in the human body (e.g. ECG, EMG or EEG) and interface them to biopotential amplifiers. DRYODE™ do not require electrolytic gels, saline solution or other wet media for robust signal pickup. Simply fix them on the skin and connect them to a suitable amplifier (further information on amplifiers see below). An instructional video on how to set up the electrodes can be found here.
DRYODE™ can be placed on most body surfaces depending on the desired biosignal to be recorded. One exception are areas which are covered by dense and/or long hair, i.e. on the scalp, where stable skin contact is hard to achieve with a flat electrode. The electrodes are sufficiently soft to adapt to the irregular shape of most body locations. DRYODE™ can best be mounted on the body with the adhesive patches provided in the kit (see video here). If you are using other textiles, belts, bandages, etc. to fixate the electrodes please ensure that the full electrode surface is in solid contact with the skin!
Yes, you can use DRYODE™ on most hairy body parts outside of the scalp. However, to ensure good skin contact on hairy areas, proper electrode attachment is crucial! Please ensure that the electrode is touching the skin with the full electrode area when fixating it. We tested different adhesive patches for the best combination of electrode fixation, comfort and removal and provided them in the DRYODE™ Kit (see instructional video here). If you are using other textiles, belts, bandages, etc. to fixate the electrodes please ensure that the full electrode surface is in solid contact with the skin!
DRYODE™ are optimized for the measurement of heart (electrocardiography – ECG) and muscle activity (electromyography – EMG). When placed on the head at non-hairy locations (e.g. the forehead), they can also be used to record brain waves (electroencephalography – EEG). Some of our customers also recorded bioimpedance or skin conductivity to deduct stress levels, bladder fill level, muscle, water and fat content and many other parameters. So be creative and experiment!
DRYODE™ are soft, dry and skin compliant. When mounted properly (link) they show a high rejection of motion artifacts that makes them ideal for applications that involve movement, e.g. during sports (check out our videos with professional athletes here and here). But DRYODE™ do not only work on land but also underwater, as you can see by ECG recordings from swimmers (link) and divers (link) during training. Please take care that your electronics and power supply are also waterproof! Should you require advice on waterproofing feel free to contact us for some tips.
DRYODE™ can be worn continuously for up to seven days, as long as the wearer feels comfortable. The materials used in DRYODE™ are chosen to avoid skin irritation or allergic reactions even during long-term use. For the unlikely case that discomfort or skin irritations occur please remove the electrodes immediately and seek medical advice.
The best way to clean DRYODE™ is by gentle rubbing with the IPA wipes provided in the DRYODE™ Kit. Any other soft, lint-free wipe damped with IPA or ethanol should do the job as well. To avoid damage to the electrode and skin irritation, please do not use any aggressive chemicals, cleaning agents or abrasive surfaces for cleaning!
The best way to store DRYODE™ is in their original packaging at room temperature and in 40-50% relative humidity. An instructional video on the storage of the electrodes can be found here. If the original packaging is damaged or lost, most other flat, clean and dry surfaces should do the job as well. Please avoid direct sunlight, extreme temperatures and extreme humidity levels during storage!
DRYODE™ should even work on skin that was treated with lotions or sunscreen. For best signal quality, we do however recommend cleaning the skin with the IPA wipes provided with the DRYODE™ Kit prior to use. To ensure reusability of the electrodes, please ensure to clean the electrodes carefully after application on skin treated with lotions. Yes, you can! DRYODE™ are specifically designed for activities that involve body movement. To ensure good signal quality during movement, proper fixation of the electrode on the skin is paramount! The best electrode fixation can be achieved using the adhesive patch provided with the DRYODE™ Kit (see instructional video here). If you are using other textiles, belts, bandages, etc. to fixate the electrodes please ensure that the full electrode surface is in solid contact with the skin!
Yes, you can! DRYODE™ are the only commercially available electrodes on the market that have been used to successfully record a clinical ECG of swimmers (link) and divers (link) during training. For your own safety, please take care that your electronics and power supply are also waterproof!
As our innovation started in research at the ETH in Switzerland, we initially compared our electrode performance against the gold standard (clinical gel electrodes), therefore making sure that the respective conductive area is identical. We are working on a smaller version that will enable additional use cases, especially in EEG research.
Some of our customers modify the DRYODE™ by trimming the green silicone backsheet of the electrodes. Although the electrodes will still function in most cases, we do not recommend any modification on the backsheet as this might decrease signal quality and thereby increase the susceptibility for motion artifacts! However, we are aware that the electrode footprint might be too large for some applications and we are working on a smaller electrode design for a future product release. So, bear with us, let us know your ideal dimensions for your application and stay tuned for future updates!
Currently, DRYODE™ is our only product on the market. But be assured we are not getting lazy. Currently, we are actively working on new electrodes types with reduced size and for the application through dense hair on the scalp. Stay tuned for future updates!
Currently, DRYODE™ are not self-adhesive and require an additional fixation, e.g. by the adhesive patches provided in the Kit. However, we currently do consider different strategies to combine reusability with self-adhesion. So, bear with us and stay tuned for future updates!
No signal or bad signal quality is in most cases related to improper fixation of the electrode on the skin. As a first measure, please ensure that the full active area (the central circle) is in solid contact with the skin. This is particularly important in hairy areas, where the hairs push against the electrodes. An instructional video on how to fixate the electrodes properly can be found here. If no signal is present after proper electrode fixation, move along the electric path to the amplifier to check if there is any open circuit, through defects inside the electrode, the snap connector or in the lead wires. Finally, check the amplifier (power, correct channels connected, etc.) and the software settings (connection, channels, gain, filters, etc.). If no hardware error can be found, try cleaning of skin and electrode to ensure proper skin contact. Finally, feel free to contact us if you are in need of assistance.
Signal loss during movement typically indicated that the electrode detached from the skin. To verify this try pressing gently on the center of the electrode and observe the signal. If the signal returns, correct the fixation so that the electrode is in solid contact with the skin. If no signal is visible, please proceed as described in the previous section.
